Generative AI has a new sibling, Agentic AI
We began with GENERATIVE AI – systems designed to respond to prompts by creating content. Generative AI can write essays, compose music, summarize documents, generate images, draft contracts, or answer questions in remarkably human language. Its brilliance lies in creation. But it is still largely reactive; it waits for instructions, produces an output, and stops there. It is CONTENT GENERATION.
Now we are entering the age of AGENTIC AI
Agentic AI refers to autonomous systems that can perceive, reason, plan, and take actions to achieve specific goals with limited or no human supervision. Unlike generative AI, which creates content upon prompt, agentic AI uses tools, interacts with software, and follows workflows to complete multi-step tasks independently. It does not merely answer questions; it acts. It is DECISION-MAKING.
The difference is profound.
Example
Generative AI can draft your holiday itinerary. Agentic AI can compare flights, book the tickets, reserve the hotel, adjust the schedule when weather changes, and notify everyone involved — all on its own.

Generative AI can help doctors summarize patient records. Agentic AI could monitor hospital systems continuously, schedule urgent scans, flag dangerous drug interactions, and coordinate treatment across departments in real time.
In surgery, generative AI sits in the background – it analyses scans, suggests approaches, and writes out plans before the first incision is made. Agentic AI steps into the theatre itself. It becomes an active assistant surgeon; continuously reading live heart data, imaging feeds, and instrument motion, while anticipating danger in real time. It can flag a weakening artery before it tears, steady robotic tools at microscopic precision, or instantly adjust actions as conditions shift mid-procedure. Instead of waiting for instructions, it works alongside the surgeon like a second set of eyes and hands that never blink or tire. The effect is striking – not a machine that advises from afar, but a responsive surgical presence inside the moment itself, where human skill and autonomous intelligence, the assistant [Agentic AI] surgeon operate together.

On parts of the Ukrainian front, agentic AI is already reshaping war. Picture thousands of small, fast drones drifting over forests, roads, and open fields – day and night – like silent clouds. Generative AI might design or describe such a system, but agentic AI runs it. The drones talk to each other, spot movement, classify threats, reroute when signals are jammed, and trigger coordinated responses without waiting for a human to approve every step. Soldiers describe it almost like an invisible moving wall — a living web in the air that can detect and strike vehicles or troops within minutes. What makes it so striking is not just speed, but its autonomy. Agentic AI turns swarms of low-cost drones into persistent, intelligent hunters that can see first, decide first, and strike first – overwhelming even the most advanced tanks or fighter jets – and soon it might deny even ballistic missiles entry. That will be a WOW moment if ever there was one in the history of war.
The agentic AI drone swarms are evolving into a layered, intelligent aerial shield – a continuously sensing “air defence fabric” that detects, tracks, and intercepts threats from drones to hypersonic and ballistic missiles in real time. And so sky becomes territory in our new age of agentic AI.
Thomas L. Friedman, the foreign affairs Opinion columnist for the New York Times, observed this week:
“Even if many leaders in Washington, Beijing and, for that matter, Moscow still haven’t grasped it, this is the first era of human history in which we Homo sapiens must govern, innovate, collaborate and coexist at a planetary scale to thrive. We will either build complex, adaptive coalitions to do that or we will be overwhelmed together. Our fates are now fused.”
