When MOVIES are declared the ENEMY

President Trump placed 100% tariffs on foreign produced movies this week. "This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda," Trump said on Truth Social.
As a South African who can remember the ridiculous apartheid bans against so many movies, or requiring them to cut scenes that would upset [& corrupt] the sensibilities of whites, I was left with a sense of disbelief. If America is putting 100% tariffs on foreign produced movies because it has become a ‘national threat’ and pure propaganda, then that country, or its President has a few screws loose.
It is true that the production of movies and series inside of America has fallen more than 40% over that past few decades, but there are many other ways to incentivise directors to produce more of the material in America. In any event how is Trump going to tariff and stop the streaming of movies and series, as streaming knows no borders.
In our interconnected world, a racist white South African has managed to get the ear of America’s far right President and his [former?] right hand billionaire bro, Elon Musk.
I am referring to @twatterbaas - a minor online storm erupted after this pretend white South Arican farmer was found to be a guest house manager in Gordon’s Bay. There was outrage from some that news24 dared digging up dirt and flinging it across the internet for all to see. I think it was the right thing to do. His vile & fake news posts were reposted by the American President and Elon Musk [with more than 300 interactions between him and @Twatterbaas], amplifying more lies and hatred.
This played a role in the most bizarre episode from the theatre of the absurd that we have seen in a long time. This was the headline in The Guardian on 9 May 2025:

So, after Afrikaners did everything they could for the better part of the second half of the 20th century using their political power to keep black South Africans in ghettos and enacting laws that stripped them from basic rights and their dignity in their land of birth, they are now eligible for ASYLUM in Trump’s America, in part facilitated by Sebastian Jooste, a fake farmer who is a real racist aka “Boer” @Twatterbaas.
